The Catholic Angel Hierarchy

Below is how Catholics are said to view the celestial hierarchy.

The First Angelic Hierarchy

First Angelic Choir - Seraphim

   

The Seraphim is said to be the highest order of angels who guard God's throne. They are often depicted as 'burning angels' to represent them on fire with love for God. In the bible Isaiah saw them as six winged beings. These heavenly creatures constantly sing of their love to God. The Seraphim hold purifying and enlightening powers, it's believed they were the first creation of God, to enable God to know himself, through the Seraphim's existence and experiences.

 

Second Angelic Choir - Cherubim

The word Cherubim is said to mean 'fullness of knowledge'. The Cherubim have the honour of observing and keeping the records of God's creative powers. It's believed that Cherubims were placed at the gates of Eden to guard the knowledge that could be gained by eating the fruit from the tree of life. Cherubims are said to have four wings and four faces. The Cherubims also act as heavenly counsellors who guard the light. Cherubims are the seekers of the eternal truth and if you are struggling to find your faith and spiritual pathway, you should call on the Cherubims to help you find the light and eternal truth of God.

 
Third Angelic Choir - Thrones

Throne Angels are associated with the power of judement. Thrones carry out God's justice according to spirital and universal laws. Ezekiel claimed they looked like wheels with eyes. The Thrones also act as angels who are friends of all the planets. They represent the divine majesty. The wheels are said to belong to the throne of God and it is the thrones who will drive forward God's chariot. The eyes represent the all knowing and all seeing wisdom of God. Sometimes the thrones are portrayed as angels who carry the scales of justice.

Fourth Angelic Choir - Dominions

The fourth choir of angels known as Dominions are said to ensure that God's will is carried out by other angels. Similar to having a supervisor or manager. They are often seen to carry an orb or sceptor which represents authority. Their other purpose is to help balance the force of creation, bringing together the integration of the material and spiritual worlds. The Dominions are the angels who represent the superiority of wisdom over intellecet and govern the natural world and the elements.

Fifth Angelic Choir - Virtues

Virtues are the angels who watch over the heavenly bodies and nature. If you're in need of encouragement, pray to the Virtues and ask them to bless you. The virtues are often associated with miracles performed on earth. The virtues are able to combine the will of God and the energies of Mother Earth to bring about heroic deeds. Shining bright and often depicted with swords, shields or sceptres, these wonderful angels will assist you in your darkest hour.
 

Sixth Angelic Choir - Powers

These angels are said to maintain order around planet earth and protect it from being overthrown by Satan. If you have been the recipient of an evil act and wish your soul to remain protected, then invoke the powers to assist you in your hour of need.

Seventh Angelic Choir - Principalities

The principalities are a realm of angels who keep a watchful eye of the nations of planet earth and it's leaders. In times of great need and wordly problems, prayers to the principalities will assist the world.

 

Eighth Angelic Choir - Archangels

The Archangels role is quite varied, they are said to help ensure God's will is done, to assist us humans in our affairs and to communicate god's messages to his people. The Archangels are also the leaders of the angelic armies. There are only four archangels acknowledge by the Catholic Faith, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and it is believed the fourth unnamed angel was the preincarnate Christ.
 

Ninth Angelic Choir - Angels

These are our own personally assigned guardian angels, their role is to watch over us during our lives.
